A Streetcar Named Desire tells the story of Blanche DuBois, a former southern belle unable to face reality or her own changed circumstances as she moves into the shabby New Orleans apartment of her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley.
This Southern gothic premiered in December 1947 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York, starring Jessica Tandy and Marlon Brando. The film version followed, with Brando and Vivian Leigh, in 1951. Multiple revivals and television adaptations. A brief historical review is here.
It is presented by agreement through Dramatists Play Service.
