Sterling Playmakers is pleased to announce auditions for Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas.
Auditions will be cold readings from the script. WELSH ACCENT NOT REQUIRED! Please sign up for your audition slot here and bring a completed audition form. (AUDITION FORM ATTACHED.)
Most actors will be playing 5-7 characters. Only Voice 1, Voice 2 and Captain Cat will have single roles. The first round of auditions will be monologues so the director can get an idea of your range. You may be asked to read all or part of a monologue a number of times with different direction. If you are called back, you will be reading sides that are more dialogue oriented so the director can see how actors work together in different roles.
You should indicate which role(s) you are interested by indicating the actor number, e.g., Actor 1, Actor 2, etc. The role breakdown by actor assignment is here. (ROLE LIST ATTACHED).
Here is a link to excellent character descriptions. Please read them as you decide which role(s) you are interested in. https://www.litcharts.com/lit/under-milk-wood/characters
Captain Cat, Polly Garter, the girls (they will be a combination of some of the woman who are cast – not auditioning those roles directly), second woman, and Mr. Waldo sing. There will be no accompaniment. If you are interested in any of those roles, please be prepared to sing bit of your favorite song. The director just needs to be sure you can carry a tune – not looking for Idina Menzel voice!
Calendar/rehearsal notes
Because all actors will be taking a number of roles, please anticipate being needed for every rehearsal indicated on the attached rehearsal. The rehearsals may be subject to change but, in general, the rehearsal dates indicated will be rehearsals with all actors called unless otherwise notified.
Please indicate your conflicts for ALL dates – not just rehearsal dates. And please be honest. Emergencies arise such as work, family and illness. But please indicate all your conflicts that you know of as of this time.
Generally, week-night rehearsals will run from 7-9:30. Saturday rehearsals will run from 2-5. Rehearsals times in May are subject to change because we will be working in tech and other final aspects of the production.
A draft calendar (subject to change) is available here. (CALENDAR DOCUMENT ATTACHED).
About Under Milk Wood
Commissioned by the BBC and described by Dylan Thomas as 'a play for voices,' Under Milk Wood’ takes the form of an emotive and hilarious account of a spring day in the fictional Welsh seaside village of Llareggub. We learn of the inhabitants' dreams and desires, their loves and regrets. The play introduces us to characters such as Captain Cat who dreams of his drowned former seafellows and Nogood Boyo who dreams of nothing at all. It is a unique and touching depiction of a village that has 'fallen head over bells in love.'
